Dr. Raj Patel grew up in Texas and studied at the University of Texas at Arlington. In 1996, he graduated from the University of Houston with a Doctor of Optometry degree as a member of the Gold Key International Optometric Honor Society. He then completed a hospital-based and geriatric eye care residency at the Portland VA Medical Center.
During his residency, Dr. Patel served as a clinical instructor for interns from two colleges of optometry. Patients appreciate his relaxed and comfortable manner and his enthusiasm for teaching. He has conducted numerous clinical procedures workshops for the Oregon and Alberta, Canada Optometric Associations and has volunteered his skills in Thailand and with the Special Olympics program in Oregon.
Dr. Patel has served as a clinical examiner for the National Boards of Optometry, a consultant to the Portland VA Medical Center, and an adjunct faculty member at Pacific University College of Optometry. He is a member of various professional organizations and a past president of the SW Society of the Optometric Physicians of Washington, where he was awarded the Special Distinction award for his contributions to optometry in WA. A frequent contributing author to Review of Optometric Business, Dr. Patel also serves on the professional speakers team for CooperVision.
Dr. Patel is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry (FAAO). This designation signifies recognition by colleagues as a knowledgeable and experienced professional who has met high standards of competence in a broad range of eye care issues. Less than 10% of practicing optometrists in the United States are Fellows. Dr. Patel enjoys playing tennis, traveling, and exploring the Northwest with his wife and three boys.
